David Architzel
President of Fairlead Boatworks



Vice Admiral (retired) David Architzel is the President of Fairlead Boatworks, Inc. He also provides consulting services for several companies and serves on a number of corporate boards most notably as an Outside Manager/Director for Teras Breakbulk Ocean Navigation Enterprise, LLC. He joined Fairlead in January 2015 after having served as Director of military affairs at Old Dominion University. As director, he was the principle advisor to the President on all military policies, programs and concerns. He served as ODU's liaison with the Department of Defense, military installations and service personnel, while promoting the university and its academic programs to the military community.

In October 2012 he retired from active duty with the U.S. Navy after nearly 40 years as a commissioned officer. For his last assignment on active duty he served as Commander, Naval Air Systems Command headquartered in Patuxent River, Md., a position he assumed in 2010. Prior to that he served as the Principal Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Research, Development and Acquisition (ASNRD&A).

Mr. Spurlock is a retired Naval Chief Warrant Officer (Surface Warfare and Mine Counter Measure Officer) with a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy. His numerous awards and commendations include six Naval Commendation Medals, one Naval Expeditionary Medal, two Southwest Asia Service Medals, a Humanitarian Service Medal, and many others. Following his career in the Navy, Mr. Spurlock was employed in 1998 by Davis Boat Works, now Fairlead Boatworks, and has a combined 40 years of maritime and marine repair experience.

Steve Schoonover
Waterfront Operations Director



As the Waterfront Operations Director, Mr. Schoonover has the overall responsibility for Programs and Production for Fairlead Boatworks. His 38 years of service in the ship repair industry have been successful partially because of his strong interpersonal skills and understanding of all shipboard trades. Mr. Schoonover is a great communicator with both internal and external customers. With his vast background and experience he has proven to be a great problem solver.

Brian Miller
Director of Business Development



Mr. Brian Miller brings to the Fairlead team over 30 years of experience in the Defense and Marine Ship repair and ship building business. Before joining Fairlead, Brian held numerous positions and profit center responsibilities for a major large enterprise and contributed greatly to the company’s long term success and profitability.

Brian is a strong proponent of Continuous Process Improvement, employing excellent organizational skills and a passion for finding the best paths to cost effective solutions. Brian's goal is to lead Fairlead on an aggressive journey to provide the very "Best Value" for the company's customers while growing the business. He is devoted to developing new product lines in order to diversify the company and create new opportunities for Fairlead's valued employees.
